Letter from the Director

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Blessed be the Lord Jesus! The Holy Spirit is working overtime with ChristLife as some wonderful opportunities for evangelization are opening.

We need your help to follow the course that we believe the Lord is laying before us. Your financial support can benefit two significant areas of ChristLife's work:

Dave Nodar speaking at an Alpha Conference
On July 7-9, Oriole Park at Camden Yards will be the site of the Franklin Graham Metro Maryland Festival, an evangelistic festival that will bring together Christians from many different denominations to hear the Gospel.  Cardinal William H. Keeler accepted an invitation for the Archdiocese of Baltimore to participate in the Festival, which is being sponsored by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. ChristLife has been asked to work with mobilizing and training Catholics in preparation for the Festival and the follow-up. In particular, ChristLife is excited about the prospect of this Festival generating opportunities to mobilize young adults for the work of evangelization.

To move forward in mobilizing young adults, Julie Ascosi will be joining us for a paid summer internship. Julie is very passionate about sharing Jesus with others. Julie's educational experience in communications and international relations, coupled with her enthusiasm are welcome additions to our team.

Each one of these endeavors is a catalyst for advancing the mission of evangelization in the Catholic Church. We need your help in order to carry out the work involved.

First, please pray for us! Prayer is the frontline of the battlefield for souls. By God's design, there can be no effective evangelization without your prayers. Prayer lays a foundation for the Holy Spirit to work and opens the pathway for men and women to come into a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus.

Second, please consider giving a monthly donation of $30 - that is equal to $1 per day (less than a cup of coffee at Starbucks). The summer months are difficult financially because many parishes and people are in vacation mode and take a break from any structured courses. We appreciate your generosity in fulfilling the divine mandate of our Lord Jesus to go and make disciples!

We believe that the Lord Jesus is doing something new. Doorways of opportunity are opening before us. More people are demonstrating a deeper love for Christ and sharing His Gospel with others. Please partner with us to equip more Catholics for the critical mission of evangelization.

Sincerely your brother,

Dave Nodar
Director, ChristLife

Metro Maryland Festival

The Franklin Graham Metro Maryland Festival is an evangelistic festival whose purpose is to bring uncommitted individuals into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and firmly establish them in a local church.

We know that Catholics will attend the Festival, looking for what you may have already found: a living relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church, a new meaning and purpose in your life, forgiveness, and peace with God. The Archdiocese of Baltimore wants to be there as fellow Catholics look for the same thing in their life.

Fr. Erik Arnold, pastor of the Church of the Crucifixion in Glen Burnie, MD, serves as the Archdiocesan Liaison to the Metro Maryland Festival and has asked ChristLife to assist him with preparations for the Festival and the follow-up afterwards. So far there has been great success at bringing Catholics out who have a burning desire to bring others to the Lord. This group includes a number of young adults who are very enthusiastic about witnessing to the Lord Jesus and connecting people to the Church.

For many years now, Catholic dioceses have been invited to participate in Billy Graham Crusades. Cardinal Keeler believes that the Archdiocese has three unique and important opportunities by participating in the Festival.

Fr. Erik speaks at a Catholic FG Info Night
First, there is the opportunity to witness to the unity that all baptized Christians share. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC #1271) teaches us that baptism is the foundation of communion among all Christians.  We know that differences exist between Christians, but we do not want to forget that we also share much in common, beginning with our baptism. When Christians join together in prayer, it serves as a powerful witness to the world, helping others to believe.  This was the prayer of Jesus himself at the Last Supper (John 17:21): "that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me."

Second, the Festival will be a great opportunity for evangelization among Catholics who are searching for a deeper and more meaningful relationship with Christ. We know from past experience that many Catholics will be in attendance. By participating in the Festival, we can reach out to them and root them more firmly in their Catholic faith, offering follow-up events to serve as a bridge back to Catholic parishes and ministries.

Finally, there is the opportunity to mobilize a core group of Catholics who desire to be trained in evangelization, creating missionaries prepared for outreach within the Archdiocese and beyond. Part of the preparation for the Metro Maryland Festival involves training volunteers in the basics of evangelization so that they can effectively reach out to others, to share Christ with them and help them to grow in their faith.

Opportunity or Opposition: The Da Vinci Code

What a great opportunity to witness to Christ! The Da Vinci Code is now showing in movie theatres worldwide. The book has held its place on the New York Times Best Seller more than 162 weeks while Dan Brown, the author, has received worldwide acclaim – positive and negative.

Many Catholics and other Christians are outraged by the deceptions and distortions that Dan Brown fabricated for the purpose of creating a thrilling story. He has succeeded in captivating the attention of millions of people – readers and non-readers who are Christians, non-Christians, atheists, agnostics, Gnostics, and so on.

That being said what are we as Catholics going to do? We can use this as an opportunity to bear witness to the Lord Jesus or to battle and oppose the premise for this best-selling work.

The following is excerpted from an article by Amy Welborn. Ms. Welborn is the author of 13 books, including "De-Coding DaVinci: The Facts Behind the Fiction of the DaVinci Code," "De-Coding Mary Magdalene: Truth, Legend and Lies" and "The DaVinci Code Mysteries: What the Movie Doesn't Tell You" all from Our Sunday Visitor Publications.

If we had to find any good that’s come out of The DaVinci Code phenomenon, it’s that it has stimulated a great deal of interest in important matters: who Jesus is, what early Christianity was all about, the power of art, and issues of gender and spirituality.

At the center of these issues stands, not just an issue, but a person: Jesus of Nazareth. I’m convinced that the reason so many of us have embraced the claims of The DaVinci Code is because we’ve never seriously tried to get to know Jesus. Whether we are church-goers or not, we’ve stood at a distance from him, letting others tell us what to think about him, never bothering to read even a single gospel from beginning to end ourselves--and, in the end, absorbing the notion, so common in our culture, that it’s all just a matter of opinion anyway, with no sure truth at the heart of it.

Well, as the witness of the earliest apostles makes brilliantly clear, this is not about opinions or myths or metaphors. Peter, Paul, and yes, Mary Magdalene, did not give their lives to a metaphor. They experienced Jesus as a human being--and, mysteriously and gloriously, as something more. They gave their lives--literally--to him and the grace-filled, abundant life with which they were filled.

Any negative effect of The Da Vinci Code lies in the fact that in all the talk about Jesus and his wife and the sacred feminine, and in all the speculation about the "real story," the Real Story is lost.

Jesus, crucified, died and risen, the One whose very real death and resurrection frees you from the power of your own very real sin and death, through whom creation and God are reconciled.

But then again, this story isn’t really lost. It’s not secret, either, and there’s not a thing stopping any of us from discovering it.

Be prepared to witness to the person of Jesus Christ to your DaVinci Code believing friends! Pray for the people in your life who need to hear the message of salvation in Jesus Christ our Lord. Listen to God as he speaks His words of truth to you. Read the scriptures, especially the Gospels, and root yourself in the "real story." Equip yourself with necessary information about the novel. Most importantly, look for opportunities to share the real story of Christ as you witness to His presence in your own life. For a $1 a piece, consider purchasing Nicky Gumbel's booklet, The DaVinci Code: A Response for your small group or parish.

Young Adults Evangelists!

Summer Intern joining ChristLife

"There is an urgent need for the emergence of a new generation of apostles anchored firmly in the word of Christ, capable of responding to the challenges of our times and prepared to spread the Gospel far and wide."
Pope Benedict XVI, Papal Message for Youth Day 2006

Young Adults are vital to the new evangelization. With less than a 1⁄4 of their Catholic contemporaries (20s and 30s) attending mass weekly and millions of young adults around the country with no knowledge of Jesus Christ and His plan for salvation, there is no better time than now to engage faithful young adults in the new evangelization.

To minister to and network with young adults, ChristLife needs to utilize their own generation.  We have been very blessed to have our current intern, Pete Ascosi, for the past year. His sister Julie will be joining ChristLife’s team to work as an intern this summer.  Pete will be moving to the position of young adult project manager and will be primarily responsible for engaging young adult Catholics in the mission of evangelization.

Franklin Graham
Festival Night for Catholics

Join Fr. Erik Arnold (Archdiocesan Festival Liaison), ChristLife, and Catholics who have joined the evangelization team for an evening of prayer, song, praise, witness and celebration as we get closer to the Festival.  This night will give us a spiritual kick to remember why we're involved in the Festival: to share the person of Jesus with other Catholics who are searching for something more in their life and welcome them into the life and love of the Church.

The night will also focus on the practicalities of the crucial follow-up to the Festival and provide opportunities to sign up for volunteer positions and the training associated with these positions. Volunteer outreach positions for follow-up, include contacting people who give their lives to Christ at the Festival, supporting or leading a small group discipleship bible study, planning an Archdiocesan Catholic prayer event, and more!

Who We Are

ChristLife is a lay Catholic ministry established in response to the Church's call to a new evangelization. William Cardinal Keeler recognized ChristLife as an apostolate of the Archdiocese of Baltimore in 1995.

"I encourage you to continue to focus your mission on equipping Catholics for the work of evangelization so that others might come to know personally the love of God in Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit, becoming disciples and members of the Church."

William Cardinal Keeler, Archbishop of Baltimore, April 21, 2006
